Tips for Seniors: Addressing Erectile Dysfunction

Senior citizens are of course among the ones who seem to suffer the most from erectile dysfunction (ED). However, it is possible for older men to enjoy a very fulfilling sex life.

Symptoms of ED

Usually a man can watch for signs of having erectile dysfunction. They are easy to spot. For instance, a man may experience a drastic disinterest in sex more often, and he may have a harder time getting or maintaining an erection.

When he does get an erection it may not be as hard and long-lasting as before. Furthermore, when he ejaculates less semen is emitted than earlier on in life.

It also usually takes a man who suffers from ED longer times to get stimulated. He also has longer recovery times after ejaculation. He usually does not have sex as many times in a week or month as a younger man would.

Causes of ED

This condition can be caused by one or multiple reasons. For instance, it could be a health-related and/or physiological issue.

Often men are temporary sufferers of ED after a surgery. Ongoing erectile dysfunction might occur upon the start of taking a new medication.

A man who suffers form chemical or psychological depression often suffers erectile dysfunction as well. Low self-esteem often accompanies depressed feelings, and is another cause. These low feelings along with performance anxiety from times in the past when a man failed to get an erection often causes repeat failures.

ED Solutions

One of the hugest steps towards addressing ED is for couples to talk to one another openly and honestly about it. The main concern is that many couples blame each other and this will only make things worse.

Women need to reassure a man that she still finds him desirable, attractive, and lovable despite the problem. A man needs to do the same for the woman, as well as help her understand he is not rejecting her and that it is not her fault.

Communication can be tough regarding this issue though. It is hard for couples not to take this problem personally, and it is usually especially embarrassing to the man. Therefore, when talking about this issue choose words carefully especially if you are the partner of the person suffering from this problem.

If you are not sure how to deal with erectile dysfunction ask your doctor. He or she can give you information about prescription medications and non-prescription treatments. There are also exercises you can do that will help you.
